When you think of earthquakes, what comes to mind?
Earth coming apart under your feet? Buildings crumbling? Hiding under tables?
Since moving to Japan, I’ve felt more than my fair share of earthquakes, but they’ve been baby ones. A little rumble, a pinch of swaying, and done in under 15 seconds.
On Saturday night, the largest earthquake I’ve ever felt rolled over the country. A magnitude 7.3.
Twitter exploded…
…and went down. For a few moments, at least.
Phone trees were activated, emails were sent around checking on friends and family and, thankfully, all in my immediate circle were well and now, days later, no serious injuries were reported across the country.
What’s crazy is not that this quake was a 7.3, or that it caused so much damage – it didn’t.
What’s crazy is that this was an aftershock of another earthquake almost exactly 10 years earlier – the infamousĀ March 2011 quake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster.
I’ve been warned about aftershocks but had no idea they could scare and shake more than any other earthquake I’d ever experienced. And to be hanging around waiting and building for 10 years and have that much power?
Terrifying, but also a pretty good reflection of what we hold and deal with in daily life when we’re trying to get things done.
So in gratitude of the fact that we’re all alive and safe, I want to know – what’s been giving you aftershocks? Because aftershocks in business are real.
- What’s something you’ve been holding on to that may rear its ugly head later and cause more damage?
- What can you let go of thinking or doing that is based on something that happened days, weeks, months, years ago that’s affecting the way you do things now…and that doesn’t have to?
It could be a thought, a process, bad information about a tool, a misconception or rejection others had about you that you’ve been fighting against since.
Can I be honest?
There are times when I’m just fighting to get through the day! And I know I’m not alone.
No one needs more of the not-great stuff that is firmly in the past coming up, announced, to shift the tectonic plates of their flow.
What can you let go of that will neutralize potential aftershocks in business and keep you in your gorgeous zone of genius?
And if you need help figuring it out, that’s okay.
We all need help in different ways and at different times to get to the places we know we’re meant to go.
If this resonated with you, I’d love to have a conversation and learn more about you, what you feel might need shifting, and how I can help.
